Member Spotlight - Marilyn Mena-Scott

Now it is time for you to meet Marilyn, a wife and mother of two. She started with us at the end of February and hasn't looked back. Her focus and consistency has really opened the door to a huge fitness success story. Not only is she making gains with her weightlifting and CrossFitting, but she is becoming a more fit and healthier person all around. Please take a moment to read about her incredible journey...

John: "Tell us a little bit about your fitness background/story. Where did start and how did you end up here doing CrossFit?"

Marilyn: "I have struggled with my weight pretty much my whole life. I was never an athletic person and never played sports. Like most women, I have had several gym memberships over the years but I never stuck with any of them. It was always the same old story. I would start off super motivated, take a few classes, use the machines some, get minimal results, hit a plateau and then stop going. I figured I was just destined to be overweight for life until I finally started getting great results with at-home fitness programs. After my first son was born I really buckled down and worked out at home with DVDs 5-6 days a week. I finally uncovered the body I knew was buried under all that fat and became passionate about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle.

Fast forward a few years later and I have gained all the weight back and then some. A miscarriage between children put me into a deep depression and I just stopped caring about myself. Everything seemed so trivial. By the time I was pregnant with my second son I was eating garbage food and was barely active. I figured I could get back on track after baby number 2 was born but that just wasn't happening. I still had all my workout DVDs but I couldn't seem to muster the motivation to even get up and press play. I needed more accountability. I needed more structure. I needed a specific class, at an exact time, where I didn't have the option to hit the snooze button again because if I did I would be SOL and not get a workout in. Chuckwalla and CrossFit turned out to be exactly what I needed.

John: "So what have you learned about yourself

since starting CrossFit?"

Marilyn: "I always knew I enjoyed working out with others but CrossFit has really hammered that in. I find that I push myself so much harder when there are other people around. Whether it's encouragement or friendly competition, it works for me."

John: "Did you have a certain perception about CrossFit? If so how did it change? What would you tell someone who is skeptical?"

Marilyn: "I think whenever there is a bunch of hype around something there will always be something negative to say about it. My exposure to anything CrossFit related was pretty much always negative. 'People are always hurting themselves,' 'the trainers are negligent,' 'it's all about the money,' etc. I can now say from experience that CrossFit is none of those things. I'm not sure how they do it in other boxes but I am nothing but impressed with the attention and care everyone receives at Chuckwalla. Not only do you get the extrinsic motivation from the group environment, you basically get your own personal trainer since the coaches come over to check your form and correct any mistakes. I came in with the mindset that I would just try it for a week and then move on to something else. I was hooked by day one."

John: "What is your favorite lift or exercise?"

Marilyn: "Currently, handstand holds. I gave myself a personal goal of being able to do an unassisted handstand (without the wall) for at least 10 seconds. I still have a long way to go. If the wall wasn't there I would just flip all the way over!"

John: "What is you least favorite?"

Marilyn: "Jump rope. My fellow moms know why."

John: "What do you hope to gain out of the future in training at Chuckwalla? What goals do you have?"

Marilyn: "Besides the handstand, I am just excited to get stronger and get better at Olympic lifts. I get down on myself sometimes when I can't get the form right but then I remember that people train for years to get these lifts perfect. They are OLYMPIC lifts. Like, people train to do them at the Olympics. No easy feat. I'm looking to build up my upper body as well and hopefully end up looking like a jacked up orangutan."
