This Monday has us crushing on one of our founding members and coaches, David Coberly!
Here is his story:
"Outside of CrossFit, I’m a project manager for the Haworth Corp and manage commercial construction projects throughout the southwest and SoCal. I have been with them since 2005 and that is what originally brought my wife Becky (also a member!) and I to Phoenix. I am originally from NorCal, and I love it up there, but Phoenix has really grown on me and is really where I consider home. Becky and I have been married coming up on 14yrs and we have 2 kids Wesley (8) and Hannah (6), who you can always find at the gym practicing their pullups, ring dips, and hand stand push-ups.
Fitness has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up in the Bay Area I was always out hiking, mountain biking, or skiing up in Tahoe. I played football and ran track in high school, but I wasn’t all that great. I enjoyed the gym time and the conditioning mostly. I went to college at Westmont College in Santa Barbara and have a BS in Kinesiology. I loved learning about the body, but my career path did not allow me to use that knowledge. After getting to Westmont I immediately got approached by a few of the rugby players to come out and play. For some reason rugby really clicked for me and I fell in love with playing it. Rugby allowed me to travel and play overseas in New Zealand as well as develop lifelong relationships with my team mates.
After college my fitness only consisted of being a gym rat. But the competition aspect was always lacking and I was getting extremely bored just lifting by myself. After years of that and being that bored I decided it was time for a change. I started CrossFit in Oct of 2013 to help prepare for an adventure race in Williams, AZ. My plan was to sign up for the 6wk trial only. But after day 2 of those 6wks, I was hooked. And since then, unless on vacation or sick, I’ve been going in 3-5 days a week. I have been known to be in there 6-7 days too. My favorite part is the friendly competition. I love that win or lose everyone is always encouraging each other. Even though I hate to lose, I’m excited to see others make gains around me, which pushed me to work harder too.
CrossFit also opened up the opportunity to use my Kinesiology background as a coach. Unfortunately the box I started out at did not really have an opportunity to step in as another coach and a leader within the box. And then along came John, who I kind of knew through the box I was at and through mutual friends. As we all know John is a man of few words, and after spending an entire weekend with him at a race he finally spilt the beans on our drive home he wanted to open his own box. I always appreciated John’s coaching style and his programming and saw a perfect opportunity to help in any way I could to get John's box opened as fast as possible and be a coach.
Here we are now almost 2 years later and watching the box grow and seeing all the athletes grow has been awesome. I can’t imagine myself doing this anywhere else but Chuckwalla."
