#MemberCrushMonday: Songgi Kim

Today finds us with a #MemberCrushMonday on Songgi Kim! (For the record, his name is pronounced "Song-gee!")

Not only has he been a dedicated member, but recently he obtained his USAW Level 1 certification and began coaching our Barbell Club. You might experience his passion and thoroughness as he examines your technique with a critical eye and polishes your performance with precise cues. Or you might have experienced his intensity when he is lifting HEAVY things, such as a 205lb Clean & Jerk, 145lb Snatch, or his favorite - a 405lb squat. Not to mention his 455lb deadlift!

He is dedicated to his family, and you might be surprised, but did you know he has a funny and soft side as well?? 

Read on to enjoy, as Songgi coined it: his rant about himself...

"I enjoy walks on the beach, my favorite color is black, and favorite food is anything my mom makes. I like beer...

A little bit about me; I am a native of Arizona who grew up in Globe, a small copper mining town 70 miles east of Phoenix. (Fun fact when I was growing up, Asian population was 4; Mom, Dad, Aunt, and myself.) I was voted “Most Unique” in High School... I have 3 wonderful boys (Ages 7, 5, and 3), and a beautiful wife Amy Kim who is also a member at Chuckwalla.

Growing up I played some soccer and baseball but was primarily involved with Martial Arts as my father owns a Martial Arts school so naturally it is something I have been immersed in since I could walk. I dabbled in wrestling for a time, but wasn’t a fan of wearing singlets… During my college years I got into bodybuilding and general fitness. I had been attending the big box gyms doing my part as a gerbil on the treadmills. I needed a change so I got into more compound movements with the barbell, which opened up the avenue to Powerlifting. I dedicated a solid year of maximizing my technique and strength in the back squat, bench, and deadlift. While this was all good and fun, my cardio and endurance were pretty much non-existent. I knew I had to add something to strengthen the heart. I didn’t know much about Crossfit but always wanted to try it. Got my butt handed to me during the warm-up. I knew I was in trouble and thus began the love for Crossfit. Unfortunately about 6 months in the gym we were at closed but as the saying goes “as one door closes another opens.” Thus we found Chuckwalla.

What I love about Chuckwalla is the family atmosphere and the freedom to explore your fitness abilities. It’s a place where you can improve yourself overall, or just to come in and torture yourself after a crazy stressful day. There is something magical about being around like-minded people who share the same sentiment and encourage each other to be the absolute best that you can be.

What I love about Crossfit in general is what it can do for you and your fitness journey. It isn’t prejudice to anyone and caters to everyone. The exposure it provides to movements and techniques you may have never thought of doing in your lifetime, and the mental aspect of pushing yourself and achieving measures beyond your own expectations.

And what he didn't mention, is that despite a love-hate relationship with cardio, he has been on our Chuckwalla Ragnar Trail Mcdowell Mountain team the last two years!
