#MemberCrushMonday: Marilyn Harbster
Today our #MemberCrushMonday is on a very special lady, Marilyn Harbster! She initially joined our "Golden Hour" class for ages 55+, and easily integrated into our regular classes once that was over. I have been so proud of her effort and take so much joy watching her set PR's in lifting, improve her stability, and accomplish things she hadn't been able to do in years, like jump roping and jumping on a small box.
Having moved to Phoenix at 5 years old, she is almost a native of the valley. She attended Washington High School, NAU and ASU. Most of her adult life was spent in LA enjoying the hectic rat race and clogged freeways. She returned to the valley in 2007. Now retired, she has spent the last 3 years as a caregiver for her mother.
She says she is very lucky to have one smart, beautiful daughter, Jennifer. A librarian by career, Jennifer is so much more: strong, positive and independent. Everyday Marilyn appreciates the fact that Jennifer left her job at Library of Congress and moved closer to her. Although Jennifer's heart might still be in DC, Marilyn is thankful have her closer, working at U.C. Davis, and she loves her to pieces.
Some of Marilyn's favorite things are cooking and gardening. On her property she has lots of fruit trees, a rose garden, and a veggie garden to keep her busy. She also considers herself somewhat of a foodie and loves to eat! In her opinion Mexican food is the best food ever, and the hotter the better.
Marilyn's health has been an issue for the last 10 years, including a serious foot injury and a fight with cancer. Since joining Chuckwalla CrossFit a year ago, her improvements have been unbelievable! She has seen changes in strength, flexibility, and stamina. Marilyn looks forward to her second year of CrossFit being even better than the first.
Being surrounded by an awesome community of Chuckwalla compels her to share something profound, so here it is:
Show up. Give it all you got. Finish strong.
These words came from a friend of hers who recently passed away. He lived his life everyday with these words. Marilyn also wants to recognize the coaches Lauren and John; without their encouragement and support, last year would have been a repeat of the last ten years.
