Today our #MemberCrushMonday is on one of our most enthusiastic members, Shannon Farber! She shares her story with us:
"Hi Fellow Chuckwalla's!
My name is Shannon. I am originally from a small town called Nimrod Minnesota (that is not a typo..its really the name lol). When I was 17 I joined the Navy and spent 20 years traveling the world as a USN Seabee (Dirt Navy). I retired from the Navy in 2012 in Ventura California and decided I wanted to be a profiler for the FBI. Then I moved to San Diego California and three years later completed my Master in Forensic Science degree specializing in Investigations.
Something that may surprise you about me is that after I retired from the military, I was diagnosed with PTSD, depression and anxiety. I dealt with it by eating away my feelings to the point that I was considered morbidly obese! TRUE STORY. I am 5'2 and weighed 235 lbs! I was diabetic, my blood pressure was off the charts and I could not even walk up a flight of stairs without losing my breath.
In 2016 I found a program that saved my life and with that I found my passion and figured out what I really wanted to be when I grew up.
I am currently The Director and a Personal Trainer at The Camp Transformation Center where I teach people healthy nutrition and exercise habits. This program helped me lose 110 lbs and gave me my life back!
SO...how did I end up in Phoenix you ask?
Funny story....25 years ago while I was in the Navy, I met a boy named Richard. (insert eye roll, LOL)
I tried everything to gain his attention...nothing worked. He got out and disappeared. 25 years later a Facebook reunion group for our Seabee Battalion popped up and wouldn't ya know it...we were both single and ready to mingle! (Timing is everything!) He's from Phoenix. And now...so am I lol. We have four dogs: 2 shih-tzu's and 2 Pitbulls. We got addicted to watching The Crossfit Games and decided to try Chuckwalla together for 30 days. During our trial month we found out the owner is our dang neighbor! Now here we are full fledged members!
I enjoy reading, half marathons, camping, hiking basically anything outdoors! Also good conversation, cussing, sarcasm, people with good hearts and senses of humor.
I CrossFit because it is a community without judgement which I think is BAD ASS! And also because it reminds me everyday to push myself harder and heavier so that I never go back to the unhealthy version of myself that I had become. My favorite Crossfit lift is the Turkish Get Up and my favorite workout is The Murph. I look forward to making many more friendships with the folks of Chuckwalla and want to thank you all for making us feel welcome!!"
