#MemberCrushMonday: Shane Doherty

This week our #MemberCrushMonday is on Shane Doherty, a fellow who isn't seen often enough around Chuckwalla CrossFit. He is also a courageous man, walking one step at time, openly and vulnerably, through some tragic circumstances.

Here is his story:

"Oh, my story. I have been happily married to my college sweetheart, Shawnee Doherty and look forward to celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in June. We’ve been blessed with 3 children, Savanna Grace, Rhetton Edward and Hollis Richard. However, our road has been a difficult one. We lost our first daughter to pre-term birth back in August of 2005. She was born prematurely at 24 weeks and lived only 14 hours. Once again, we were dealt another difficult blow when Hollis was diagnosed in March of 2016 with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), a rare incurable, inoperable tumor that resided on his brain stem. After a valiant 9 month effort, which included 7 trips to Cologne, Germany for immunotherapy treatments, Hollis passed away on January 2nd, 2017 a month shy of his 8th birthday. Needless to say, our family has been through so much. {visit their website to learn more}

Today, we focus heavily on our little family of 3 and make the most of every day we have with one another. I was born in San Pedro, CA and grew up in Palos Verdes Estates, CA. I left PVE after my freshman year of high school and attended the Orme School, a college prep school in central Arizona. I then attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where I received a degree in Merchandising & Consumer Studies. I worked in the clothing industry, selling men’s apparel brands to golf clubs, better men’s retail and department stores. In 2002, I switched gears and entered into the procurement services industry, working with hotel management companies, cruise lines, gaming enterprises and higher education. In 2004, Shawnee and I left Newport Beach, CA and moved to downtown central Phoenix. Today, I am the Director of Strategic Accounts for Charlotte, NC based Foodbuy LLC, the nation’s largest hospitality procurement services organization where we provide savings opportunities in the areas of both food and non-food that drive optimal economics for our clients in hospitality, leisure, gaming and higher education.I started attending Chuckwalla CrossFit over a year ago.

As a frequent traveling business developer, maintaining consistency has always been a challenge for me but my coaches have been patient and understanding. What’s always kept me coming back has been the Chuckwalla community. They are more than workout partners, they have become lifelong friends. I look forward to spending quality time with them even though the workouts are challenging and difficult at times for me being a “big fella”. They always push me to finish, whether I’m in the middle of the pack or dead last. It’s about finishing. I am grateful that I can modify the workouts so that I still get the sense that I’m making a difference to my body and overall health and well-being.I am looking forward to continued transformation in 2019."
