#MemberCrushMonday: Dennis Harkins
Our #MemberCrushMonday is on a local boy, Dennis Harkins, who takes pride in being one of our "old guys" and I consider him ring-leader of the "master's athletes" at our gym.
Here is his story:
"I am happy that I have joined Chuckwalla Crossfit for several reasons. I grew up in the neighborhood just east of our facility and I am comfortable with the surroundings. A hundred years ago, I went to grade school (Desert View) just a few blocks away and later graduated from SHS just down the street. After graduating from NAU, I entered Active Duty with the USMC as an Infantry Officer. After seven and a half years service and while still on Active Duty, I was hired by the U. S. Marshals Service as a Deputy U. S. Marshal (DUSM). My first duty station was New Orleans. While a DUSM, I continued serving in the Marines through the Reserves and eventually retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Just this past August, I retired as a Senior Inspector with the U. S. Marshals Service having a combined and continuous 30 year, 3 month and 1 week career.
After several moves, I was able to come back to Phoenix and now live in the Royal Palm Neighborhood with my wife (Jennifer), also a Supervisory DUSM, and our Son, Jacob, a 5’11” 240 lbs 12 year old...needless to say he will be joining Chuckwalla this Summer. It may sound hard to believe but after 30 years of government service I seem to be rigid and inflexible! Thus, I have joined this CrossFit community in an effort to reverse 30 years of doing just enough to pass an annual fitness test. I am humbled by how out of shape and immobile I have grown. The Chuckwalla staff has their hands full ensuring that I don’t fall over and break a hip! I would have to say that the Bench Press is my favorite lift as it is the only one I seem to be able to do Rx.
I am not on any social media as I have nothing of importance to say, and I am not interested in sharing pictures of my meals...besides, I am able to log-on to my sister’s accounts to see how heavy my old girlfriends have gotten and how old and gray their husbands look!
Some may be surprised to know that I once went 3 months without a formal bath/shower during Operation Desert Storm. Though, anyone within sniffing distance of me in the gym may wonder if I am trying to break that record.
Now that I have retired, I plan on spending more time with the family and dogs, puttering around the yard and planning trips to the Arizona wilderness for quad rides. I enjoy planning out the itinerary for our family’s annual trips to Europe. My retirement goals are probably no different than anyone else's. I also look forward to the finer things in life such as binge watching KUWTK’s, and plowing through at least a quarter of the programs my wife has saved on the DVR which will train me to become the next house flipping millionaire.
P.S. I have five of the blue workout shirts I wear everyday, and no one hates them more than my wife!
