What do you do outside of CrossFit?
I have been married to my wife Bethany for over 15 years, have 3 sons, and pastor a small church in the West Valley called Missio Dei (latin for 'mission of God'). We have also started a coffee shop in Sunnyslope called Cultivate. We're on 7th Ave & Dunlap and hope to have our grand opening in August. It's a nonprofit business we operate in order to provide a place for the community and opportunities in job development for vulnerable youth.
What is something about you that would surprise us?
I used to rap. This was back when I could still grow hair on my head. I produced music for a few local hip-hop artists and performed my own songs throughout the valley. Now I just freestyle bedtime stories to my kids at night.
What do you enjoy?
I enjoy music, roasting coffee, public speaking, exercising, bourbon, community, movies, and hearing a great story.
Why do you CrossFit?
I hate going to typical gyms, but I've always thrived and pushed myself in team settings. I wrestled and played football growing up and there was a beautiful blend of individual responsibility mixed with a community relying on one another. I've never been able to push myself quite as hard on my own as I did then. Until CrossFit. Yes, I am responsible for giving it my all and for my own personal growth each time I come in, but I love also having several people around me who are there for the same reason I am, knowing whatever tough WOD we have that day we're in it together, cheering each other on.
What is your favorite CrossFit lift/workout?
I've always had a love/hate relationship with burpees. I also want to say power cleans because they're one of the few moves I'm decent at!
