#MemberCrushMonday: Jason Koemans
Here is his story:
This week we are following up with an older member and previous Member Crush, Jason Koemans. Here is what he has to say about his time at Chuckwalla since he first started:
How long have you been at Chuckwalla CrossFit?
I’ve been at Chuckwalla for over three years. When Lauren and I first got married, she made me run. A few years later, she made me try CrossFit. You can imagine which one I like more. There’s a reason I haven’t come to run club.
What got you started and why do you keep showing up?
My wife got me into CrossFit. I’ve always been an athlete, but when I showed up to CrossFit for the first time, I got so frustrated that there were so many things I couldn’t do. I hate not being able to do something. I could dunk a basketball but I couldn’t do a kipping pull-up or squat with a bar overhead for weeks. My jumprope spent more time being thrown across the gym in frustration than doing double-unders because I couldn’t get them down.
How has Chuckwalla CrossFit impacted your life?
Community is huge for our family. When we first moved to Phoenix, we didn’t know anyone. When we temporarily left Chuckwalla, I was disappointed to go. The majority of our friends today are from the gym.
How do you apply what happens inside the gym to everyday life outside of our box?
Doing hard things. It might surprise you to hear that I’m historically a very weak person mentally. I used to give up on myself very easily. By the grace of God I’ve really grown in the area and I think He’s used CrossFit among other things to do that.
