#MemberCrushMonday: Amy Tunis
We featured Amy not long after she first joined our gym, so we wanted to check back in with her!
Here's her story:
I am a mom to a 13 year old daughter and I'm a recovery room nurse. My main hobbies are Olympic weightlifting and cooking. I am a major foodie, and sometimes my love of good food gets in the way of my fitness goals. But I am getting better and better at cooking tasty things that also meet my nutritional goals! Also, I really enjoy being outside in nature. I love camping, paddle boarding, hiking, and backpacking. And of course, I love Crossfit.
How long have you been at Chuckwalla Fitness?
I've been with Chuckwalla for about 2 years now.
What got you started and why do you keep showing up?
I had been Crossfitting for a few years in Prescott. Then I took a break for a while and moved to Phoenix. When I was ready to start up again I spent quite some time searching for the right gym. Chuckwalla seemed to fit for me so I gave it a try. I loved the name, the feel of the gym and then I saw the great coaching and community I was hooked. I am so happy I found it.
How has Chuckwalla Fitness impacted your life? Chuckwalla Fitness helped me find myself after I was feeling a bit lost in the chaos of life. I had a tough few years and really thought my Crossfit days were a thing of the past. I sort of gave up on fitness for a while. But I knew my life was missing something and that I deserved more. So I stopped making excuses and I started up again. It took a while for me to get the courage to get back in the game. But as soon I felt that barbell in my hands, I decided I would never be without it again. There is this rush that comes with pushing yourself through pain. Its inspiring to watch yourself and your friends reach their goals and accomplish amazing things.
How do you apply your fitness/what you learn through fitness to your life outside of our box? There is a parallel between life and fitness. Perseverance, mental fortitude, positive attitude, and humility will get you so far in life and in the gym.
How do you stay motivated or disciplined?
Dan usually encourages me to go when I don’t feel like it. A good support person can help you stay on track sometimes. Also, something that really helps me is to sign up for a competition, fundraiser, or event to train for. This keeps me motivated and focused with a specific goal to shoot for. And when I am not feeling it on a particular day, I remind myself that in 5 years of Crossfit, I have never regretted doing a single workout, but I have always regretted skipping one.
What is one of your favorite motivational quotes?
"You, me or nobody is gonna hit you as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. Thats how winning is done!"
What are your current fitness goals?
I want to take my snatch and clean and jerk to the limit. But I'm noticing that my endurance has started lacking as a result. So I am really focusing on my metabolic conditioning right now....But wait, I forgot about muscle ups, so that too...Lots of goals.
What fitness accomplishment are you most proud of?
My first pull-up. I worked on it every day for a year. I took myself for ice cream right after. I didn't believe I would ever get one. It was awesome! That was when I learned that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to.
Do you have any favorite memories from Chuckwalla Fitness?
I have so many great memories, but my favorite times are during our in-house competitions. Watching people fight through the tie breakers and seeing someone PR or improve. Those times are the best!
What is your advice for a new Crossfitter or someone trying to get back into shape?
Focus on small goals, learn the movements and be patient with yourself. Your body will do amazing things if you keep showing up. (And stay away from the scale, muscle weighs a lot) Strong is beautiful.
