John & Faby Bowles

#MemberCrushMonday: John & Faby Bowles

This is their story, written by Faby.

What do you do with your time, for work, play, etc?

We moved from Richmond VA. We are both originally from Yuma, AZ and after covid we decided we wanted to be closer to family. Both of our families live in Yuma.

We have 3 kids- 1 girl & 2 boys, our oldest daughter is 30 and lives in Yuma with our 1st granddaughter who is 3 years old. Our two boys are with us in Phoenix and are 22 and 17. We are both nurses, John works for HonorHealth and I work for ASU. We like to travel and enjoy culinary experiences. We enjoy doing outdoor activities, walks, biking and hiking.

What is something about you that would surprise us?

We have both done a few Ragnars and have both done 1/2 marathons - John has even done a full. We are trying to get back into running.

How do you make a difference in the community?

We try to be involved in the communities we live in- I chose to serve as a nursing instructor working on the next generation of nurses and John works in our healthcare system. Both organizations have opportunities to volunteer and serve. We have been active members in our nursing organizations that work in different areas like improving access to care and of course education of our communities.

Why do you choose to workout at Chuckwalla?

We were introduced to CrossFit when we need it most health wise and probably on a few other levels. We started off with a bootcamp and transitioned into CrossFit at Nakoa in Yuma. John and I are opposites, CrossFit would never have been something I would have ever considered- I’m not athletic or competitive - John is. CrossFit demonstrated to both of us just how strong we were and could be not just physically but mentally. We could walk away from the same workout, with some modifications in movements but in the end we could workout together and still burn calories and sweat and gain muscle. That to both of us was appealing because we are on two very different levels and could have never worked out together in the past - we just didn’t know how. The CrossFit community is one of the biggest attractions, having that accountability and community made a big difference in our success. Shortly after our move to VA we found a great CrossFit gym but with covid had to leave it and began to work out at home - we bought equipment and did as well as we could for the past year.

How does Chuckwalla help you be strong for life?

We hope to gain that sense of community and accountability we have so enjoyed in the past and has helped us be successful with weight loss, toning and muscle building. So far Chuckwalla has great friendly people, we are happy to be a part of the community!

What is your favorite lift/workout?

I think both of us like deadlifts. It has been where I have been able to gain the most in PRs as far as weight. John and I both have challenges with upper body movements!
