Today's #MemberCrushMonday is an introduction to our newest coach, Keith Imig! He will be coaching on the weekends and Tuesday evening. We are glad to add his family to our community!
What do you do with your time, for work, play, etc?
When there’s not a pandemic I work at Black Rock Bouldering gym. Starting in April I’ll be training in the National Guard.
In our family, what we do with our free time is ever evolving. As my youngest, Orin (1 years old), begins to really explore his surroundings and become more independent our adventures and road trips have become shorter, “safer”, and a little less often. Hiking, climbing, and kayaking adventures have definitely changed or been put on hiatus all together but we like to still get outdoors as often as possible.
What is something about you that would surprise us?
I’m not sure what about myself is considered surprising. However, I usually get a surprised look from people when they learn that I have an 11 year old son, or that I studied Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, or that listening to Extreme Death Metal is calming for me.
How do you make a difference in the community?
I care a lot about health and general fitness I’ve taken a lot of time to study things like kinesiology and physiology as a hobby because of how passionate I am about good, healthy movement. I love mobility and just might be able to help you with that overhead squat position! 😊
Why do you choose to workout and coach at Chuckwalla?
I’ve been into CrossFit for almost a decade now. In the beginning I fell in love because of the amazing community and the support it gave. I saw results fast and stuck with it. I soon transitioned from being a globo-gym personal trainer to becoming a CrossFit coach. After a few years of chasing ambitious lifting numbers and not listening to my body or proper mechanics I injured myself. While recovering, I was introduced to climbing and took a few years away from the CrossFit style programming as I healed. I lost my fitness gains but went on many great adventures, ultimately meeting my wife, Laura, who joined me on all my climbing trips. When our son was born, Laura joined the postpartum class at Chuckwalla and loved it. Almost a year later of utilizing globing-gym kids care and online fitness programming once all the gyms closed, I finally decided to come to check out Chuckwalla myself. I need every edge to maximize my fitness for my recent enlistment in the National Guard and I know a community and coaches like the ones at Chuckwalla will help get me to my goals. So thanks to Corona Virus I’ve been given the opportunity to continue training here at Chuckwalla. After just a few weeks of being here I can tell it’s going to be incredibly hard to say goodbye when I leave for Army basic training in April!
How does Chuckwalla help you be strong for life?
Again it’s the community and the people here. It’s cheesy and redundant but so true. Exercises and programming are available everywhere. Some great ones for free even. I was following some really great programming myself before all the gyms closed and as long as you’re consistent it works right? Well what about the days you lose motivation? Being around other people who motivate you or who you want to match or even compete with gives you that extra drive. Without that competition I can say that on any given day in the gym by myself I probably give at least 10% less effort than I would here. You can’t beat a supportive community with perfect programming alone. We “embrace the suck” together!
What is your favorite lift/workout?
Right now my favorite lift is probably the Back Squat. My favorite workout is a tie between Dianne and Nancy. Both of which I currently need to scale.
