#MemberCrushMonday: Michelle Mancilla
What do you do with your time, for work, play, etc?
I have been a project manager for a financial corporation for around 23 years. I’ve lived in Arizona all my life and love it here. We have 6 generations of Arizonans. Most of my time is spent with my supportive husband and children. I’m always active and most of the time can’t sit still for long periods of time, unless it’s a good movie. I love entertaining at our home and enjoy cooking and trying new recipes. I also enjoy traveling with my husband and kids seeking out new adventures. This also includes seeking out a local restaurant or activity we haven’t tried.
What is something about you that would surprise us? I make custom cakes.
How do you make a difference in the community? I volunteer at my children’s school and have taught Junior Achievement.
Why do you choose to workout at Chuckwalla?
Prior to Chuckwalla I had been at a CrossFit box in Surprise AZ since 2013. When we moved to Central Phoenix I wasn’t looking forward to searching for another box. I figured it would take time to look around and it might mean trying a few boxes before I decided which one would be a good fit for me. After working out in my garage for about a year and doing some of the WODs prescribed from my previous box, I figured the time had come for me to start the search. My first browser search gave me 3 listings near my zip code. I started looking at the class dates/times and eliminated one. I decided to first start with signing up for a class at Chuckwalla. After that first class I knew this is where I wanted to be and became a member shortly thereafter.
How does Chuckwalla help you be strong for life? A lot of the movements simulate everyday life for me. Things I do every day are easier to accomplish because of the stamina and strength I have built as a result of quick fast and combined explosive exercises. For example, avoiding a second trip to the car to take out groceries = farmers carry, Lifting heavy storage bins to a top shelf = Push press, Picking up my COVID weight pug = Cleans.
What is your favorite lift/workout? I would say either the strict handstand push up or clean. For some odd reason handstand push ups have always come easy for me. I used to really enjoy burpees but lately slamming my body into the ground just isn’t as fun as it used to be.
