Here is his story:

"They say owners look like their dogs, but having a super lean, and lighting fast muscular greyhound as my pet proves that’s a lie! I’m not going to say I joined Chuckwalla to look more like him, but I’m working on it.

Why do you choose to workout at Chuckwalla?

I came to Chuckwalla a couple of months ago with my son Connor so we could do something together and get stronger along the way. While he wanted to start lifting and staying fit for rugby, I had NEVER weightlifted before. Having run marathons in the past and hiked Rim to Rim to Rim at the Grand Canyon for years, I had no idea what to expect. ALL of the coaches at Chuckwalla have been awesome! Their patience and commitment to making sure everyone stays sore, but not hurt has definitely helped with the motivation to keep coming back! Each of them has helped me to improve during every visit and they have an uncanny ability to stay positive with me even when I know I’m a piping hot mess.

What do you do with your time, for work, play, etc.?

I’ve been a teacher and principal for over 25 years in every grade from PreK-12 and everywhere from the South Bronx of New York (where I’m from originally- Go Yankees!) to the ‘mean streets’ of North Scottsdale and everywhere in between. Outside of work I love spending time with my amazing wife of almost 25 years Deirdre, my daughter Ciara, my son Connor (who is usually in the gym with me), and my dog Iggy. Most weekends you’ll find me watching Connor play rugby, Ciara compete nationally in Irish dance, playing guitar, hiking, building something out of wood or cooking.

What is something about you that would surprise us?

  1. I played professional tour golf for two years after college golf and have neve picked up a golf club competitively since then.

  2. My wife is an Irish emigrant and we go back frequently to visit her mom, all of her siblings, and the many nieces and nephews still there. If you need Irish travel tips…I’m the guy. If you need a hard laugh, ask me how they hazed the yank from New York city into their dairy farming family!

  3. I can make 30 minute brownies in 28 minutes

How do you make a difference in the community?

During my first teaching job in New York, I volunteered at an orphanage in Peru and have never stopped serving in my community since then. Currently, I organize a week-long trip every year for 70 middle school students to travel and serve the homeless 12 hours each day in a variety of food kitchens, shelters, and tent cities locally and throughout the southwest. It is a life changing event for many kids who have continued to go back for years after on their own!
