#HealthierMe: Eat Think Do Better
Just Breathe- Resiliency

To be resilient is to be able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. This requires a strong shift in mindset and specific tools to help manage or eliminate the anxiety, pain or fear we face in these difficult situations.


As we learn to be resilient, we live a more conscious lifestyle. With that, we bring more awareness into our lives and into our actions. Furthermore, into our bodies and minds.

 

With our awareness, we learn more about ourselves. We start to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us. We may start to find our body has always been tense and hunched over, with stored stress in the muscles or realize our shallow breathing. Regardless of our progress in living a more conscious lifestyle, we will always be faced with new circumstances or old habits that creep up from the conditioning that took place over the course of years. How can we manage or change our bodies
response to stress or flight or fight responses? Or gather the proper focus to make better decisions?

In Yoga we call this Pranayama. Pranayama means breath extension or control and is used for relaxation, fatigue, or anxiety. In the yoga tradition, the breath is said to carry a person's life force and is aimed at increasing vital energy in the body and mind. It opens up the blood flow throughout the body, soothing the nervous system and bringing it back into harmony. As it loosens the body, stored emotions and memories can be released naturally. It is also scientifically proven to affect the heart, blood pressure, the brain, our blood pH, digestion, and the immune system. Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body because when you breathe deeply, it sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax. The brain then sends that message to the body. There are many easy breathing techniques that can be beneficial and even fun ones that leave you instantly relaxed or relieved.

--Michelle McDonald is a registered 200/hr Yoga Instructor through Yoga Alliance and has 7 years in her yoga practice. She took her training in Hatha Yoga at Desert Song Healing Arts Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She now teaches Astanga and Restorative Yoga, along with Pranayama to help provide relief from injuries, trauma, or psychological stress. She likes to be creative and uses many forms of art. She has labeled herself the Sunset Chaser. She loves animals so much that her dream is to adopt most of the animals in one shelter and be one big happy family.
