#MemberCrushMonday: Enza Lo Cascio

June 10, 2018

Our #MemberCrushMonday this week is an over-comer. I introduce you to Enza Lo Cascio! Here is her story:

"Hi my name is Enza and I moved to AZ from a suburb of Chicago when I was about 11 years old. What most people don’t know about me is that I am a first generation born American. My parents immigrated to the United States in the early 70’s from a small town in Sicily. I learned English right around the time I was going to start preschool. I have one younger brother.  I loved being bilingual growing up so I decided to study languages and received a Bachelors of Arts in Italian. I am also fluent in Spanish. In my late 20s I was offered a position as a vocational counselor working with adults with mental illness and teaching them employment skills. I fell in love with it and pursued a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and currently work as a career counselor helping with employment goals for adults with disabilities.

I have an 8 year old daughter, Natalie,  who keeps me on my toes. I met the love of my life almost 5 years ago.  My fiancé is one of the most caring individuals I have ever met. One of the things I admire about them the most is the fact they are always willing to give someone a second chance in life.  My fiancé has taught me how to be a better person.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced was in my teenage years.  I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at the age of 12. I had numerous hospitalizations between the ages of 12 and 15 with talks of the doctors wanting to do a colectomy.  I was able to avoid one but had to take large quantities of prednisone which affected my weight and my moods. At about 18 the colitis was finally in remission and I am lucky to say I have had minor boughts of recurrences. But by then depression and anxiety set in.  I dealt with both for about 2 years and eventually overcame it. I feel that my experience with both have helped me in my current career choice.

At the age of 40 I was diagnosed with degenerative disc on my spine along with arthritis in my back. I had to give up one of the things I enjoyed most -- hiking.  I hiked the Grand Canyon top to bottom and back up in one day. I had been going to regular gyms and one day my fiancé suggested I try Crossfit. That is how I ended up at Chuckwalla.  At first I only wanted to come in the weekends and attend the gym during the week. However I quickly became addicted. I am a very competitive person and love how I can compete with myself.  Although I never see myself RX a workout, I can honestly say I am the the strongest I have ever been. Chuckwalla has such amazing, caring members who are so supportive!"
